Matteo Thun's Design for Julius Meinl

Italian-Austrian architect and designer Matteo Thun and the visual form of Julius Meinl cups and Vienna coffee house culture.
Matteo Thun designed the Julius Meinl Trend cup line. He sketched the Julius Meinl coffee boy with the red fez (hat) and placed it upside down on a white background. He sought to achieve high recognition value by using the classic red colour in the logo. By rotating the fez and turning the tassel into a handle he created this contemporary cup.

Matteo Thun was born in Bolzano in 1952. He was a student of Otto Kokoschka in Salzburg and completed his degree in Florence in 1975. He started teaching product and ceramic design at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna in 1981 and has been responsible for modernizing the brand image of Julius Meinl. He is currently living and working in Milano, Italy.

Special Hint:

Turn your Julius Meinl shipping box upside down and enjoy Matteo Thun's sketch 'Storia d' amore': The story of the coffee boy being kissed by an angel, who then turns into a delicious and inspiring cup of coffee.
